Real Wood Paper

Merry Christmas Deer Wood Card

Real Wood Paper Christmas card

Merry Christmas Deer! It’s that time of year when we all love to receive Christmas Cards in the mail. They mean even more when they are handmade! You know Grandma keeps that in her drawer for years to come and it brings a smile to her face every time she see’s it and thinks of you.

Materials Needed:

  • Aspen .010″ Thick Fleece Back Short Grain
  • Aspen .025″ Thick Wood Back Short Grain
  • Merry Christmas Deer! Digital Stamp Set
  • Black Cardstock
  • Paper cutter
  • Glue (we used Bearly Precision Art Glue)
  • Colored Pencils (we used Prismacolor)
  • Printer

DIY Christmas Card Deer Digi Stamp

If you look at Streamside Studios Merry Christmas Deer Digital Stamp Set, you will notice our exact image is not there. That’s because we took elements she already had designed, and put them together. That’s what’s fun about digital stamps. Buy the set once but rearrange into a different layout every time!

We wanted our Grain Direction to go across the card,  not up and down the card. More like a sky would appear in nature. We used short  grain but you could use long grain and just turn your image sideways when you print. That’s one of the many beauties of Real Wood Paper. If you want the grain going in the other direction, just turn the sheet and there you go!

Once the digital stamp scene was printed on the Aspen Fleece Back, we used our Prismacolor Colored Pencils to color in the image. It’s surprisingly easy to use colored pencils on wood. A gentle hand applying multiple layers of color can really pop on a piece of wood.

When the digital stamp scene was colored to our satisfaction, we cut out the scene, layered it on a piece of black cardstock and then a piece of Aspen Wood Back. All cut with a standard crafting paper cutter and glued with Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue.

Santa Gnome Wood Earrings

Santa Gnome Wood Earrings

Could these Wooden Santa Gnome Earrings be any cuter??? We were so excited to find this adorable cut file and couldn’t wait to try it out. As cute as these Wooden Christmas Earrings are, they were just as fun to make! Watching them come together piece by piece was exciting!

Materials Needed:

  • Aspen .025″ Thick Wood Back Long Grain
  • Cherry .025″ Thick Wood Back Long Grain
  • Eastern Red Cedar .010″ Thick Fleece Back Long Grain
  • Cricut or other cutting machine
  • SVG File
  • Glue (we used Bearly Precision Art Glue)
  • Small piece of sandpaper
  • Earring hardware and tools
  • Very small circle paper punch
Santa Gnome Wood Earrings 1

The first important item here is the GRAIN DIRECTION. Aspen and Eastern Red Cedar have very distinct wood lines which make them a perfect fit for a Santa’s beard and hat! So we recommend that you use our LONG GRAIN sheets and align your cut images so that the wood grain goes up and down instead of side to side on your Cricut mat. We have linked our Long Grain sheets up above in the materials list however you can use our Short Grain and just turn in the other way on your cutting mat.

The second important item here is the Santa Gnome Earring cut file does come with images with or without holes. We used the files WITHOUT the holes. The holes are just too small and intricate for the wood. We opted to punch the holes for the earring hardware ourselves as to not damage the tips of the gnome hats.

We know most you already are super experienced with your Cricut machines so we do not really need to get into those details. For our full list of recommended Cricut cutting settings for Real Wood Paper, you’ll want to visit this tutorial on How To Cut Real Wood Paper with a Cricut.

You will notice that for the hats, we used our thinner fleece backed sheet. This was to help reduce the thickness and weight of the earrings.

Once you have everything cut out, you’ll probably have to gently work the cut pieces from the full size sheet by gently bending back and forth. They may make a cracking sound but that’s normal…it is real wood. Because these are earrings and close to the skin, we’d recommend taking a piece of sandpaper to the edges of the wood just to remove any little leftover splinters.

We really loved using the Bearly Precision Craft Glue on this project. It worked perfectly! Assembly of the pieces was easy and the glue dried quickly. Once dried we punched the holes in the hats and installed the earring hardware. Then we sat back and took in all the adorableness!

We also think if you made the cut files bigger, you could easily make them into Christmas Tree Ornaments or Gift Tags. The options and ideas are endless!

Our beautifully talented friend Shawne at Streamside Studio created a stunning peace of card art with her hand drawn digi stamp sets Falling Leaves and the sentiment is from her Christmas Poinsettia set. Colored Pencil on Wood Bookmarks

Colored Pencils on Wood Bookmarks

DIY Cherry Wood Bookmarks printed with 3 stunning, hand drawn digital stamps, cut with a Cricut Maker and colored with colored pencils! You have a lot of options with this project!

Let’s talk about the wood paper thickness, grain direction and printers first. To start, we used our 8.5″ x 11″ .025″ Thick Cherry Wood Back Short Grain sheets.

Grain Direction matters when you are running wood paper through a home/office printer. We used our HP ENVY Photo 7855 printer to print the falling leaves digital stamps onto the Cherry Wood Paper. The wood is more flexible with the shortest length of the sheet (short grain). Short grain goes through a printer easier when inserted 8.5″x11″. Long grain goes through a printer easier when inserted 11″ x 8.5″.

DIY Printing can be challenging with Real Wood Paper but certainly not impossible! We recommend using a straight through feed laser printer with our Real Wood Paper however we have found that this little HP ENVY Photo 7855 printer does a pretty amazing job at printing and the ink not bleeding too much. We tested and compared 2 reasonably priced home/office laser and photo printers. You can view the printing results here.

We laid out our leaf digital stamps in a Word document and due to the size of the bookmarks (2″ x 6″), we laid them out horizontal but printed them on short grain portrait. That will probably make more sense by looking at the photos below. We then aligned a bookmark shape (3 times) from Cricut Design Space to cut out our bookmarks with a Cricut Maker. For you savvier Cricut users, there’s probably an easier way to accomplish this within Cricut Design Space with the Print then Cut feature. For Cricut blades and settings when cutting Real Wood Paper, view this Cutting Wood with a Cricut Tutorial.

For those of you who do not care to cut out your own bookmark shapes, we sell Cherry Wood Bookmark Blanks with Tassels in the online store. As an alternative to printing images, rubber stamps with a permanent ink or even embossed ink works fantastic with Real Wood Paper.

Materials Needed:

  • 8.5″ x 11″ .025″ Thick Cherry Wood Back Short Grain
  • OR Cherry Wood Bookmark Blanks with Tassels
  • Cricut Maker
  • Colored Pencils – we used Prismacolor
  • Falling Leaves Digital Stamp Set by Streamside Studios

Use a small circle hole paper punch and punch holes for the brads through the overlapped ends. Insert brads into holes and secure brads by folding metal ends. Done!

*Note: You do want to make sure the grain is going in the 2″ direction, not the 5″ direction (Short Grain) so that the wood is able to bend in the direction you need to make a ring.

How To Print on Wood

Printing on Real Wood Paper

How To Print On Real Wood Veneer Paper Sheets

We are often asked which printers we recommend for printing on Real Wood Paper sheets. We offer some basic printing information for both our Professional and DIY Printing customers on our FAQ’s Page.

While we don’t specialize in printing, and it’s impossible for us to test every inkjet and laser printer on the market, we understand the importance of recommending printers compatible with Real Wood Paper for our customers’ convenience.

DIY Printing

For our DIY customers, using a straight-through feed laser printer is the best option. However, sourcing such printers with this feature is becoming increasingly challenging in the USA. Consequently, we’ve taken the initiative to test several reasonably priced home and office printers. You will find that information at the link below.

Your Printer’s Capabilities

Achieving impeccable prints on Real Wood Paper hinges largely on your printer’s capabilities. Although factors like wood sheet thickness and grain direction are pertinent, the printer’s ability to handle thick cardstock-type sheets is equally crucial. We recommend referring to your printer manual to review its unique specifications.

About Our Wood Sheets

In the samples provided below, you’ll notice all prints are produced on our Short Grain 8.5″ x 11″ Real Wood Paper sheets. Are you wondering why Short Grain over Long Grain? Real Wood Paper has more flexibility when bending with the grain, facilitating smoother passage through the printer’s rollers—an essential consideration in the printing process.

*Note that the pictures below are scanned with a HP ENVY Photo 7855 printer/scanner and there has been no editing, enhancing or touching of the photos. They are exactly as scanned by the aforementioned scanner.

DIY Wood Gift Tags and Labels

DIY-Hot-Cocoa-Gift-Tags

Tis the season to give gifts! And what better gifts to give and receive but yummy homemade treats!

Below is a materials list and the details with how we created Wood Gift Tags and Labels. While the tags and labels are similar looking, changing up the ribbon, jute, font and or paper punch design can make each a unique piece of art.

  • 8.5″ x 11″ White Pine .010″ thick Fleece back Short grain

DIY Cookie Box Gift Tags
DIY Jelly Jar Gift Tags
DIY Muffin Wood Labels
DIY Hot Chocolate Jar Gift Tags

We used Word to create each set of words for our tags and labels. The key is to leave enough space around each set of words so that your paper punch doesn’t overlap and not make a complete circle. We used a standard HP Laser printer to print all the labels on the 8.5″ x 11″ White Pine Fleece Back sheet.  We punched out each set of words with a 2.5″ round paper punch. Using a 3″ Round or Scallop paper punch, we punched out all the backing pieces from a sheet of 8.5″ x 11″ Cherry Fleece Back sheet. To adhere the 3″ scalloped or round Cherry Wood Paper to the White Pine Wood Paper, we used Beacon’s 3-in1 Glue which can be purchased at any craft store or Amazon. At the top of the tags, we used a 1/4″ paper punched for a small round hole for the ribbon and natural jute.

Maple Wood Tag Cut With A Cricut Tutorial
Wood Tag Cricut Tutorial

Using a tag svg, we determined the perfect size we needed with the tag by figuring out the longest name on our list and adjusted the size of the tag in Design Space to fit the name on the tag. Our tags final size is 2.5″ x 4″. We lined up a dozen tags, 4 across and 3 rows, to be cut from our 11″ x 17″ Maple Long Grain Wood Back Sheet. We could have easily gotten another row of tags for a total of 16 tags from one 11″ x 17″ sheet of wood paper. While we do have many species available including several gorgeous exotics and ornate woods, Maple matched our stockings the best which was the look we were going for with this project.

3 Wood Paper Thicknesses – Fleece, Paper and Wood

This quick video showcases the backing materials of our three thinnest (non-adhesive) Real Wood Paper sheets and demonstrates the flexibility when folded along the grain.

Fleece Backed (.010″ thick) is a very thin, sheer, flexible backing appropriate for dollhouse enthusiasts, candle wraps, lamp shades, envelope liners…anything where flexibility, luminosity and light-in-weight is a must. The backing material looks and feels similar to very thin vellum. It is also excellent for adhering to another material such as cardstock, wood, etc. (.010″ Thick = 10 PT/165 GSM)

Paper Backed (.016″ thick) is slightly thicker than the Fleece backing. The paper backing has a texture and is excellent for adhering to other backing materials such as cardstock, wood, etc. This thickness is frequently used as wedding invitations that are glued to a larger sheet of cardstock backing. It has great flexibility for printing, textured backing to ‘grab’ adhesive and creates a beautiful, sturdy invitation, announcement, etc. (.016″ Thick = 16 PT/265 GSM)

Wood Backed (.025″ thick) is very strong and sturdy yet still has the flexibility to run through laser printers using the straight feed feature. There is wood on both sides which is perfect for announcements, menus, invitations, programs and more. You get to see the beauty of the wood on both sides. (.025″ Thick = 25 PT/414 GSM)

Great Use Ideas:

*Print on using a laser printer or sublimation printer
*Cut with scissors, craft knives, cutting boards, paper cutters, guillotine cutters, Cricut Maker, paper punches, laser cutters, etc.
*Paint, stain, draw with ink pen
*Laser cutting
*Wood burning
*Score and Fold
*Model making
