What backing/thickness is right for my project?
All of our sheets begin as raw wood on one side, a layer of eco-friendly, biodegradable adhesive in the middle and then a backing of fleece, paper or another sheet of wood. To view images of our backing materials, please VIEW THIS PAGE or VIEW THIS VIDEO.
Fleece Backed (.010″ thick) is a very thin, sheer, flexible backing appropriate for dollhouse enthusiasts, candle wraps, lamp shades, envelope liners…anything where flexibility, luminosity and light-in-weight is a must. The backing material looks and feels similar to very thin vellum. It is also excellent for adhering to another material such as cardstock, wood, etc. (.010″ Thick = 10 PT/165 GSM)
Paper Backed (.016″ thick) is slightly thicker than the Fleece backing. The paper backing has a texture and is excellent for adhering to other backing materials such as cardstock, wood, etc. This thickness is frequently used as wedding invitations that are glued to a larger sheet of cardstock backing. It has great flexibility for printing, textured backing to ‘grab’ adhesive and creates a beautiful, sturdy invitation, announcement, etc. (.016″ Thick = 16 PT/265 GSM)
Wood Backed (.025″ thick) is very strong and sturdy yet still has the flexibility to run through laser printers using the straight feed feature. There is wood on both sides which is perfect for announcements, menus, invitations, programs and more. You get to see the beauty of the wood on both sides. (.025″ Thick = 25 PT/414 GSM)
We always recommend testing our wood products for your project first to ensure compatibility. If you have any questions about which product is right for you, please CONTACT US prior to ordering. (Note: All sales are final unless product is determined to be defective. See our RETURN POLICY.)
What is Short Grain and Long Grain?
This has to do with the direction the grain is going on the sheet. Short Grain means the grain is going in the direction of the shortest direction. Long Grain is going in the direction of the longest direction. VIEW GRAPHIC HERE or VIEW VIDEO HERE
Do the sheets vary in Color and Grain?
Yes! Our Real Wood Paper sheets are shaved from real trees. Just as each tree has its own unique characteristics, so does every sheet of Real Wood Paper. No two sheets are the same. That is what makes our product unique and what makes your project so beautiful. Each is truly one of a kind. To see a sampling of variations by specie, VIEW COLOR and GRAIN VARIATIONS page.
What kind of printer can I use to print on Real Wood Paper?
For Professional Printing Companies, we are not experts in all the printing equipment on the market so we are not able to tell you if your specific equipment will print perfectly. However, our experience has been that most printing companies are able to use their existing laser printers, digital printers, etc to produce beautiful end results for their clients.
For DIY’ers, any laser printer with a manual or straight feed works best. We know that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a laser printer with a straight through feed so we have tested a few popular printers. CLICK TO VIEW HOME/OFFICE PRINTERS WE HAVE TESTED.
We do not recommend using our paper in inkjet printers. Inkjet ink is wet and will bleed into the wood grains before completely drying. However, we have found that some Inkjet printers do just fine with Birch, Maple and sometimes Cherry.
We always recommend testing our wood paper with your printer first to ensure compatibility. (Note: All sales are final unless product is determined to be defective. See RETURN POLICY.)

Can I score and fold Real Wood Paper?
Yes! You can score and fold any of our 3 Real Wood Paper thicknesses. For best results, score your paper with a crisp line going WITH the wood grain. You may need to go over that line a couple of times. Fold on your score line.
If your project does require scoring and folding against the grain, the wood will most likely crack and splinter. You want to use just enough pressure so it doesn’t cut all the way through the sheet. It takes a little trial and error to get it right but once you get the setup figured out it will fold just fine for you. If there are still a few splinters on the fold line, just rub with a little sand paper. Some species fold better than others such as birch, maple and cherry.
- Try spritzing the wood with a little water at the score line as this will help make the wood be more flexible.
- Once your sheets are scored and folded, putting them under weight (such as a big heavy book) will help enforce a flatter fold.
- Using a regular clothes iron on a warm (not hot) setting, heat up the fold area, fold and put under weight. The heat reactivates the adhesive making the wood more flexible. When it’s cooled it will hold the desired shape better.

If your paper curls, all it takes is a warm clothes iron and a heavy book/box. Iron your paper with a warm, not hot, clothes iron and then place a large, heavy book or box on top of the paper to return it to it’s original flat state.
